How To Fight Discouragement When Developing Your Talent

I got up from my bed and started walking towards the bench that was on the veranda. It was early in the morning and I could smell the fresh air flowing through my nose. I sat on the bench and watched the sun rise and the only sound I could hear was the birds singing in the air. It was a bright day and I felt that it was the day I could start working on my idea of starting a coffee shop for those people who need a hot cup of coffee before they go to work. I felt this idea tingling in the tip of my fingers and my shoulders were prepared to hold the weight of this task. Only one person would make this idea come to reality, my father. If my father would give me the capital and support, I can surely do this. I ran as fast as I could to my father’s bedroom to share this incredible idea I had. As I arrived at the door of his bedroom, the door opened and it was him, ready to leave for work. I asked just for 5 minutes of his time so that I can share my idea. He sat with me down and I shared with him my idea of the coffee shop as he listened. After I was done, he said, “I do not mean to hurt you but you are dreaming too hard and I need to bring you down to mother earth. There are already world class coffee shops out there and the fact is, you will never match them. Think of something else.”

Ouch, that hurts badly for someone wishing to develop his or her talent. In the midst of a bright idea that definitely matches your talent, a big stone is thrown to you and many of times it’s too hard to swallow. Immediately, you feel like giving up and you just cannot go on. This is the biggest challenge we face when we want to develop our talents, discouragement.

When the person you look up to decides not to support and discourages you from moving forward, it hurts so bad and may cause a deep ache that might affect you for the rest of your life. For you to withstand such kind of discouragement, you need to stand up and fight for what you believe in.

This is what you should do:

When a discouraging comment comes, use it as a stepping stone to go to greater heights. One person said, “Throw me a brick and see the castle I will build”. Instead of being hurt by comments, use them to achieve your goals.

Prove to the people who discourage you that you are able to do it by making sure you work hard until you achieve developing your talent.

Do not say too many words trying to convince them that they are wrong because the more you try to convince them, the more they take that idea away from you.

Never tolerate negative perceptions to what you know you have a chance of trying out.

Always remember that the people who changed the world, faced greater discouragement than yourself.
